THE last email from Thailand. Written through happy/sad tears (yes, there is such a thing), February 28th, 2013.
“Hey friends! Once again, sorry for the several-month email hiatus. This’ll be my last big update, as I am leaving Thailand in a mere 11 days and will be back stateside by mid-April (the 15th, to be exact) so I should be seeing many of you in person sooner than later and will most likely talk your face off unless you can shut me up with some papaya salad or pad thai.
“I realized recently how much I’m going to miss Thai food as it has become a very important part of my daily life. I don’t really miss western food at all, and I would be perfectly content to exclusively eat Thai food every day. As one of my last ‘bucket list’ activities, I signed up for a cooking course in which I’ll learn to make 6 different dishes, including an appetizer and a dessert. Gonna bring that shit back to the states and eat it every. single. day. And eggs. I’d estimate 40% of my diet now consists of eggs in various forms.
“I’m spending the next week and a half getting ready to leave, seeing as many friends as I can and getting all my ducks in a row for 5 weeks of traveling before I head back to Washington. And trying desperately to get a better tan so I can rub my Thailand-brown skin in all your faces 🙂 It’s no island tan like Addy’s though.
“SO. The travel plan. My first stop is Siem Reap, Cambodia. I’ll stay there with my friend Alex (former Chiang Mai resident) and spend a couple days at Angkor Wat. I might also check out Lake Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in SE Asia. From there, I’ll bus to Sihanoukville, a beach town in the south (nicknamed ‘Sinville’ and I just recently found out why) and possibly jump on a ferry to Koh Rong, a beautiful little island (ya know, for tanning purposes). Last stop in Cambodia will be Phnom Penh to see the one-and-only Dave Koken. Next stop: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. No friends currenly living there, just want to check out some other big cities in SE Asia and take a few pictures with some pretty buidings (google image: Petronas Towers). After a few days in KL, I’ll hop on a bus heading south to Singapore to see my friend Christine, who has just been transferred there with her PR firm (previously living in NYC). I’ll spend ~6 days and god knows how much money in Singapore (I hear it’s pretty expensive and there’s A LOT of shopping). The very last leg of my trip will take me (in a very roundabout route) to the middle east! I land in Tel Aviv, Israel on April 3rd and will spend 11 days there. I’m excited about this part of my trip because it will be so different (I’m a little burnt out on Asia). And Hebrew is not a tonal language, so I might just be able to learn a bit.
“I land in Seattle on April 15th and will be in Washington for an undetermined amount of time. If anyone has any requests for items from any of the above-mentioned countries (to recap: Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Israel), let me know! I’m having mixed feelings about coming home but one thing I know for sure is that I’m SOOO excited to see all of you! I still can’t believe that it’s already been over a year, and some of you I haven’t seen in SEVERAL years which is just absolutely ludicrous, so let’s change that.
“Hope everything is sweet like Georgia peaches back home! And if any of you fools living in Seattle wanna pick a girl up from the airport around 11pm on the 15th you just let me know! SEE YOU SOON!!!”
